Welcome to things I’ve been thinking about lately,
I’ve been thinking a lot about my beliefs and values… What actually makes me, ME? And one of the things I’ve come to realise is just how much curiosity has shaped the way I look at the world. It’s very interesting how that’s something that is considered a “skill.”
My career coach at SMU told me several times how recruiters appreciate qualities like curiosity, earnestness, diligence, etc. I thought curiosity was basic? Isn’t that the way people usually determine most things? Haha, HUGE MISUNDERSTANDING
The internet is a strange place, with countless narratives that contradict each other, yet very little genuine reflection. Don’t get me wrong, we consume information very quickly. However, we fail to question or process any of it, and the second we find anything remotely relatable, we jump to believe in it. Why? Maybe because it provides clarity, certainty, relief? Hence, all our attention spans are 3-4 seconds long, at best.
There is nothing wrong with that at all, but I think that’s where surface-level thinking begins. And I am sorry, but when did we stop asking questions? There was a time when people valued answers, and now we ride on assumptions.
For me, curiosity has always been about digging deeper and wider (that’s what she said 😉), it’s about talking to all my friends about it, pestering them for their perspective, and not getting tired of it. Without it, I feel like I would rely more on assumptions than understanding. Perhaps not entirely, but I do think a lack of curiosity can make people more certain without truly knowing why. That’s why exhausting every angle to get a perspective felt so satisfying, I felt informed when I finally decided what I think about it.
Over time, I’ve come to realise curiosity isn’t about finding the right answers, it’s about asking better questions. The more informed you are, the more thorough you get, and your understanding adds depth to your perspective.
So maybe curiosity is not a trait; it’s a way of living more consciously.
One last thing I want to leave you with, when I ask you about a certain situation, do you talk from experience or observation?
