THE PIECE THAT MADE FALL IN LOVE WITH WRITING.
“Empire state of mind” by Alicia keys, a song that described the beauty of one of the biggest cities in the world and how nothing compares to the art that New York is. It’s a city that creates magic in the realest ways possible, there is magic everywhere, every street, every building, every graffiti has a story. That’s what makes New York the dream, nothing is easier to do but it’s the conviction of people that it’s just how that city works. Why New York? Why just this city? Why is this spoken so highly of?

New York City, the city of endless possibilities, the city that never sleeps, the city of dreamers, a place where time feels endless. Why? Why is it called “the city that never sleeps” partly cause it doesn’t. According to a study by UK mattress site mornings reveal New York is actually the most sleep-deprived city in the world. The life there is chaos everywhere, in everything and everyone. It might be just a place, an ordinary city, an island but what makes it extraordinary is that is symbolizes faith. After all, it’s the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of”. The streets have a sense of newness, the smell of trash bags lying on the sidewalk and the unique yet disgusting odour that the subway lets in the air of magic. Manhattan, the center and the life of New York also called the big apple, it refers to “bigger prizes”.
It’s the place dreams come true, where the real world begins and ends. The high energy, the diversity, the culture that isn’t its own, but a mixture of the whole world, the representation of love, light and uniformity. New York isn’t just a city it’s an emotion it’s a feeling that is undefinable, it’s the feeling of liberty, the only place where the chaos is your calm. Where peaceful means walking on the streets of Brooklyn towards Dumbo for sunset at 7pm during fall, the sound of the jittery leaves through the cold breeze, the colors yellow and pink everywhere. It’s the small things like bagels and coffee down town, hot dogs from the street vendors, strolling through central park, a ride in the iconic and extremely expensive yellow cabs or taking the stinky subway throughout town, or the chills you get when you walk through the neon lights and countless screens at times square, whether it’s the zillion brunch spots or a 100 year old steakhouse in a basement in the corner of some street in queens is what makes New York, the city what it is.
The sense of autonomy to be whoever you want to be, as unique as unique gets and not an inch of doubt, the relief of not worrying about judgment on what one is wearing or how many tattoos you have on your body. It’s the city of dreamers not because it’s the economical guru or because two of the world’s biggest stock markets are situated with its roots. It’s the city of dreamers because it indicates faith, acceptance and confidence.
I guess the fascination of how a place can create such a huge place in people’s hearts is what makes this so intriguing, it is still a part of this world it is still part of the biggest capitalistic country on the planet yet none of it explains why? digital representation in movies, shows, blogs of residents one of the biggest reasons why people from all around the world want to move to New York, it is depicted as a city of miracles where nothing seems to impossible. As I conclude, I am realizing how much fiction a girl from a tiny bit of South Asia imagines her dream city to be. New York will never be just a city it’s a state of mind.
